The deadline of making your contribution is April 15^th of the year. If ever April 15 happens to fall on a weekend, the deadline will be the next business day.

My Rants About Final Cut (pro) X !

When a new version of Final Cut Pro was announced and I watched Apples glittery preview of all its new and great features I was duped into getting really excited about the forthcoming launch, forgetting that sometimes the things not mentioned are just as important as the things that are!

I should have been concerned with the concept of my favourite piece of software in the whole world (the one I rely upon to pay my wages) being rebuilt from the ground up. Many of the pro features that I needed and loved have just vanished and I am supposed to be happy with the new inbuilt animated titles and the fancy new way apples organises everything for me and even dictates how I use footage on my timeline!

Final Cut Pro?

Why did I love Final Cut Pro? I liked the flexibility of it as a professional hub- not necessarily how creative you could be using it, I actually liked the fact that the text generators were rubbish and that you could easily mess up the sync if you wanted to and that to colour correct you had to have a basic knowledge of what you were doing and if you wanted to do anything creative you could round-trip to motion, color etc.

One program I did try to have a look at a year ago was iMovie just to see what Apples domestic piece of editing kit was like and I actually recommended its use for a couple of relatives to edit their home-movies with Star Wars like titles! And to drop their iTunes music and iPhoto pictures in with the Ken burns effect! I however would never consider using iMovie to edit anything- as it dictates the way I edit and does not give me the flexibility of a pro application. For this reason I won’t be using Final Cut X, no multi-cam, an annoying timeline where I can’t use it to drop stuff where I like anymore, no acceptance of layered Photoshop files, limited export options, no support for exporting to tape, can’t get an sdi output.

If you have no need for the Pro features of an editing application and want to publish a movie to Facebook, Youtube etc, then by all means by Final Cut X, you can easily Color- mis-match and add fancy cloud titling. It accepts a wide variety of video formats and being a 64-bit application makes the most out of pro machines! So if you are looking to create a quick and easy wedding video then great.

Where did Apple go so wrong?

By not really focusing on the Pro community and surrendering to gimmicks and the mass-market. If Apple had payed close attention to what professionals use and want out of Final Cut Pro, there would have been a few tweaks to the software and not a complete overhaul. Many professional photographers use Aperture to edit their photographs yet would never turn on its iPhoto options such as Faces or Location. Do you think Adobe are going to redesign Photoshop from the ground up anytime soon? They will just keep adding features (that you don’t need!) to enhance and adapt a successful and popular piece of software that people are happy paying good money for to make a professional living.

Apple please rename- Final Cut Pro X to iMovie Pro and just rebuild Final Cut Pro 7 into a 64 bit application with increased file support, web 2.0 export options and the ability to change the text sizes and fonts. We don’t want to use Adobe or Avid yet you leave us no choice!
