What is digital sports photography? As the name implies, it’s taking pictures of people engaged in sports, typically in an attempt to capture motion sequences – all with a digital camera. However, it has only been in recent years that high-quality digital cameras, like the Olympus Pen E-PM1, that are capable of taking rapid sequences of shots have hit the market.

There are, of course, professional applications of this technique in digital photography, but much more often amateur photographers want to take pictures at their favorite sporting events of the teams they love, in action. And even more than that, many parents, who spend a lot of their time at their kids’ games ,want to commemorate those experiences in pictures. How else could you show off to Bob at the office what a great hitter little Sally is?

Primarily, the objective of the digital sports photographer is to catch the bulk of the action as it occurs, just as it is with the traditional film photographer. Part of the skill involves being able to anticipate action before the fact so that you can be set up and ready to go when it happens. There are characteristic shots the sports photographer hopes to capture: a pitcher winding up for the pitch, a batter going through the sequence in a swing, motor vehicles racing around a track (particularly at the finish line), hard hits in football, hockey, or rugby, and dunks or jump shots in basketball.

In the time before digital cameras, while it was difficult to capture these fast-moving action shots in still pictures, you could do so more easily and effectively than you could in the early days of the digital camera. Film cameras with high-speed film respond instantly when you hit the shutter release and could snap a rapid sequence of shots quite well, provided you had an auto-advance mechanism. Early digital cameras, on the other hand, were subject to an agonizingly long pause between shots as the camera saved the image you just took – and they tended toward blurriness in motion shots anyway.

Not so with some modern digital cameras. Many now can take a rapid-fire sequence of pictures and return good, clear action shots. Moreover, most digital cameras currently on the market are quite high resolution, and some even allow you to mount different lenses for different applications.

For example, with an interchangeable lens camera, you could mount a telephoto for taking pictures of a pitcher going through the wind-up and the pitch, a wide-angle lens to capture a complex football play, and so on. This makes it possible for nearly anyone to become a good digital sports photographer, provided they have the eye and are willing to practice.
