• How should a Library or non profit price items at a Book Sale?

When setting up a Book Sale, prices can be a major driver on to how much money your organization makes. You need to be able to price items low enough that people want to take advantage of the deal, but high enough to make the money worth the time of your volunteers.

From researching many book sales, there is a general pricing structure many libraries use.
Paperback books range in price from 25 cents to 1 dollar.
Hardcovers range in price from 50 cents to 3 dollars.
CD’s range in price from 1 dollar to 3 dollars (sets priced around $1 per CD)
DVDs range in price from 1 dollar to 5 dollars (sets priced around $1-2 per DVD)
Childrens books range from 10 cents to $2 each.

The price ranges are usually determined by good condition(gift quality) books being higher.

To help reduce the amount of books to pack at the end of the sale, many organizations also host half price and bag sales. These will help clear out large quantities of books and allow an easier clean up process. Some libraries will even have a free day after these bargain days. Typically they will allow teachers and other non profits have first pick on free day (the first couple hours) then open the rest to the public.

This helps with storage of left over items, and reduces the amount of work for clean up.
